Cancer blog 3

I apologize that I haven’t updated everyone on what’s going on with my prostate cancer. Honestly, I’m trying to wrap my head around this whole thing. Nobody ever expects to hear those 3 words; “You have cancer”.

Anyway, I went back to the University of Nebraska Medical Center last Thursday to go over the MRI I had the week before at Bryan Hospital. I saw both doctors that I saw up there previously.

They both told me that I should have had the MRI done up there because the one from Bryan was blurry. They also said that the whole group of doctors there had viewed the MRI and were of one mind. The cancer has spread beyond the prostate capsule.

They also brought up a new term; at least one that I hadn’t heard so far in regard to my situation. Stage 3. That one rocked me a little, but having read up on it, I now realize that the term just refers to how large the cancer is and if it has spread. In my case, I know that it is growing, and I need to get going on treatment.

Doctor Enke then asked me a strange question; at least I thought so. He asked if I took fish oil! I said yes, and I had for years on my personal physician's recommendation. He proceeded to inform me of 3 studies that had shown a probably link between fish oil consumption and prostate cancer in men! WELL!!! I quickly removed that from my daily supplement regimen in a hurry!! I guess it's possible that taking the fish oil may, repeat MAY have led to or sped up my getting prostate cancer!!!

Now; the treatment plan. Friday, I started a medication to pretty much kill my testosterone. I have to take it for a couple of months before they can start the radiation treatments and then keep on it for 2 ½ years. I asked about side effects and Doctor Enke said “Well, you’ve seen all of those commercials for low testosterone, right?”. I was honest and told him that when they come on, I flat tune them out. He said “Good!” and proceeded to fill me in.

The side effects are as follows:

1                Fatigue. Hell, I’m 65 years old and worked for 53 years of my life. How much more tired can I get???

2                Hot flashes. Well, he actually said that for men they like to refer to them as ‘Power surges’. He also said that if I suddenly break out in a sweat for no reason, I’ll know why. His suggestion? Get a personal portable fan!! He did tell me that there are medications available if it becomes too unbearable. Listen, Doc; thanks to the gene that I inherited from Mom, I sweat in the wintertime!!! I’m used to looking like I just stepped out of the shower.

3                To put it politely, this could be called “Limp noodle syndrome”. I’ll just leave it at that!

4                 Weight gain, especially around the belly. Well, I’ve been working on losing weight so that I can get my knees done. They’re both bone on bone and need to be replaced. I guess I’ll have to work even harder on that.

They asked if I was going to get the treatments done up there and I told them I hadn’t planned on it for 2 reasons. Linda can’t drive because her doctor won’t allow it and the cost of travel back and forth 5 times a week for 8 weeks would be prohibitive. So, they set me up with 2 more doctors to take over from here. I go back to see another doctor up there September 6th. He is their radiation treatment specialist. They said that he may recommend a different medication to replace the new one they started me on; this other one is fairly new. They also said that the co-pay on it could be as much as $1400 a month!! Let’s see, if I sell everything that I own, including my sons’ inheritance, I can probably afford a few months. WOW!! Anyway, I will worry about that if and when it happens.

This coming Friday, the 31st, I go see Doctor Staves down here at Bryan to talk about the radiation treatments. I will update you all on that and future developments as they occur.

Again, sorry for the delay, but this is a little worrisome right now. I may have to lean on my sons a little more, but I ain’t dead yet and don’t plan to be any time soon. I can still do my jobs, and I will.

Eagle Raceway 8/25/18

Temperatures in the mid-90’s and high humidity led the crowd for the Fold ‘Em Finale, presented by the Nebraska Lottery to arrive late. But with 2 of the season-long points championships in doubt and the other 3 having fierce competition for moving up a spot or 2, the action was furious throughout the night.

Also, with the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals less than a week away, there were several visitors from around the country who showed up to get an early crack at the high banks of Eagle Raceway.

No serious incidents occurred in the preliminary racing.

The Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod A Main’s first circuit was led by the 88F of Rich Flock with Amber Cook’s 21, the 5 of Mike Scheinost and Bobby Draper in the 62 rounding out the top 4. Trevor Noonan passed Draper on lap 2 to put the 66 into fourth. Jeremy Down looped the 4D in turn 4 on lap 4 for a caution. Noonan advanced to third on the restart and Cole Wayman passed Scheinost for fourth a lap later. Gunnar Pike jumped his #25 all the way up to third the next tune around with Cook falling to fourth. Shawn Harker put the 40 into the fourth spot after another lap as Pike advanced to second. Pike moved to the lead with 10 to go. At that time, it was Pike, Flock, Noonan and Harker. The next time around Dana Deeke looped the #6 in turns 3 and 4, bringing out the yellow flag. Harker used the restart to move up to third and took over second after another circuit. The next lap saw Joe Schidler take over the fourth position in the K00 and move to third the next lap. Joe Feyen snagged fourth with 5 to go in his 25X. Lane Cornwell spun the 14X in turns 1 and 2 with 3 to go and the yellow lights were lit in the corners again. Feyen took advantage of the restart to move to third making the final top 4 Pike, Harker, Feyen and Schidler. Harker didn’t manage to win but accumulated enough points to snag the points championship in the Sportmods.

This marked Pike’s second victory in a row at Eagle Raceway. When I asked if he was glad he had changed his mind about not racing a sportmod after the big mess he had been involved in a few weeks ago he said “I was just going to call it a year in the sportmod stuff, but I’m sure glad I didn’t because this car is so fast! It’s been this fast ever since we got it! It’s just plain awesome; I don’t know how to explain it. I started ninth and tonight was one of those deals where I had to be patient, and I’ve been known for not being patient. I was patient tonight though, and I think I need to be patient more often”. Pike’s sponsors include Larson Motors, Interim Health Care, Speedway Shocks and Afco.

Next up was the Feature race for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Michael Wade’s 12, the 13T of Tyler Jackson, Albert Kiihne in the 85 and the 46 of Ryan Gilland led the pack after lap #1. Kiihne and Gilland both passed Jackson as did the 22 of Nick Beckman. Kiihne grabbed the lead the next time around both got very loose the next lap, losing the lead to Gilland as Beckman passed Wade for third. Dave Carter got past Wade after another circuit, putting the 2C into fourth. Carter and the 83 of Jeff Ware made contact with 11 to go with Carter spinning to a stop on the front stretch. Ware was sent to the rear of the field during the caution. At that time the top 4 were Gilland, Kiihne, Beckman and the 6R of Roy Armstrong. Beckman moved to second with 4 to go but spun to the infield on the last lap making the top 4 Gilland, Kiihne, Armstrong and the 66 of Jeff Watts. Despite heading to the pits late in the race, Ware was able to pick up the track points crown in the Hobby Stock Division.

This was Gilland’s first Eagle Raceway victory after nearly pulling off the win the week before. He related “You know, last week was really close. I think it came down to an inch or less. I thought I had that one, and it was really disappointing to lose it at the line like that, but I’m very happy for Brint Lemke because he’s a good driver and a good friend of mine. So, it turned out really good either way. I haven’t raced here at Eagle a whole lot in the past, just a few specials here and there. This is my first year running weekly here and my first win; it feels really good. I need to thank my crew Mark Saathoff, Mike Fielder and Matt Lafflin for being here with me every week. A special thanks to my wife for letting me go racing “. Gilland’s sponsors include Gilland Electric, WinElectric, Paul Scholl Construction, Ironwood Builders, Excel Plumbing and Filley Powdercoating.

The Runner Freight IMCA Modified A Feature was definitely the most exciting race of the evening! Trevor Baker in the 25!, Justin Wulf’s 86, the 42K of Jan Korth and Nate Thompson in the 3T were the first four back to the flag stand after the first circuit. Lap 2 saw a caution for debris on the track. Thompson moved to third on the restart. Brandon Verbeek’s 4B lost the driveshaft the next time around to slow the action again. Jordan Grabouski moved to fourth on the restart in the #30. Wulf looped his car in 3 and 4 the next lap, moving the V45 of Rik Gropp to fourth. Grabouski advanced to second on the restart. The yellow lights were lit in the corners again debris on the track from Gropp after he made hard contact with the front stretch wall. Gropp headed to the pits for repairs, moving the 21H of Shane Hiatt to fourth. Grabouski took over the lead on the restart. Cliff Poessnecker’s 27X spun in turn 4 2 laps later for another caution period. Mike Densberger moved the 81 to fourth on the restart. Hiatt and Densberger took over second and third the next lap with Baker moving back to fourth after another circuit. Korth and the 1RS of Rodney Stopak spun in turns 1 and 2 with 8 laps remaining. Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth on the restart, but Jared Deterding’s 13J and the 79 of Peter Shoup spun in 3 and 4. Grabouski jumped the cushion in turn 4 on the restart, allowing Hiatt to grab the lead. Densberger hit Grabouski the next lap and spun out in turn 4. At that time, it was Grabouski, Hiatt, Zoubek and Baker. Zoubek passed Grabouski on the restart but lost the spot back to him the next lap as Wulf moved back to fourth. Densberger and the 3A of Aaron Pella made contact with 2 to go and both cars spun in turn 4. Densberger went to the pits with damage to the right front of his racer. 1 lap after the restart Grabouski vaulted back into first and held on for the victory with Hiatt, Zoubek and Wulf rounding out the top 4.

The win gave Grabouski the 2018 Eagle Raceway points championship after recently picking up his 200th career win. “That was an awesome race! Shane, Zoubek, I and everybody else had a great race going. It was a lot of fun! I ended up at the right place at the right time and was lucky enough to pick up the win” he said. Grabouski’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, GRT Race Cars, Twin Rivers, Zeck Ford, Integra Racing Shocks, Icon Pistons, Moock Trucking, Wojo Painting, Schmidt Machine, Charger Manufacturing, Speedway Works, Hergott Farms, Sidetrack Bar and Grill, Nelson Tree Service, Penner Insurance, BP Heartland and PBS Rentals.

Brad Gallagher used his pole position starting spot to lead lap #1 of the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Main in his #26X. Close behind were the 10V of Bryan Vannausdle, Trenten Fugett in the 3T and Adam Reifler’s 55. Fugett advanced to second on lap 2 and Reifler followed him into third after another circuit. Steffen Oaks passed Vannausdle with 10 to go for fourth, but lost the spot to the 13BS of Justin Callender 2 laps later. Callender advanced to third the next lap. Oaks grabbed fourth again the next time around and passed Callender with 3 to go as Shawn Hein put the 5H into fourth. Hein passed Oaks the next lap to make the final top 4 Gallagher, Fugett, Hein and Oaks. Although he finished 7th on the night, RJ Maas is your new Sport Compact champion.

This was Gallagher’s first ever victory in this, his first year of racing. He stated “It was fun! It was pretty good race. I could hear them coming, but I wasn’t going to give it up easy. The track was good tonight; it’s my kind of track and my car does really good on this kind of track. I want to thank my wife and kids for letting me put a bunch of time in on racing. Also, Joe Feyen and Joe Baker for all of the help that they put in with endless nights to get the car ready to go”. Gallagher’s sponsors include Great American Lawns, RGS Repair and J & M Farms.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car finale for the 2018 season saw Nate Weiler’s 4W, the 57B of Boyd Peterson, Neil Nickolite’s 12N and the 0 of Chase Weiler out front of the pack at the end of the first circuit. Nickolite moved to second on lap 3 and Chase Weiler passed Peterson for third the next lap. Lap 5 saw Matt Richards put the 1R into fourth, only to lose it to Jake Bubak’s 74B the next time around. Bubak moved to third the next lap. Richards regained fourth with 17 to go. Ryan Kitchen’s 21, the 93 of Ryan King and Brandon Bosma all came to a stop in turn 4 the next lap. Bubak jumped up to second on the restart and snagged the lead the next lap with Chase Weiler again moving into fourth. A car did a 360-degree spin to cause a caution after 2 more circuits. Joey Danley used the restart to vault up to third on the restart as Nickolite fell to fourth. Danley moved up to second the next lap. The final change in the top 4 came with 6 to go when Tyler Drueke put the #12 into fourth. At the checkers it was Bubak, Danley, Nathan Weiler and Drueke. Drueke’s 4th place finish wrapped up his 3rd straight Racesaver Sprint Car championship at Eagle Raceway.

Bubak was just 1 of the visitors to Eagle Raceway, coming in to get some extra laps prior to next week’s Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals. His win came from the 12th spot on the starting grid. “We put the 360 in last night at another track, got the win and had a lot of confidence going into tonight and we managed to do it again. We got through our heat race alright, so I’m assuming I’ll draw bad next week and have to start at the back of my heat. We almost won our heat race tonight, so we have to do that for sure next week! I need to thank Mike and Melissa Meyers. They’re giving us a place to stay this week. It’s so nice to have a nice cool shop to work in all week” said Bubak.  Bubak’s sponsors include Coyote Candle Company, Momentum Racing Suspension, Sardeson Racing Products, Maxim Chassis, King Racing Products and Winters Rear Ends.
