Eagle Raceway 7/28/18

The large crowd who filed through the gates of Eagle Raceway Saturday evening for Go Lucky 55 Night, presented by Racesaver and Hormel were greeted by cloudy skies and very un-July like temperatures in the mid-70’s. The track, thanks to a heavy overnight rain was FAST and extremely racy.

There were no significant incidents in the preliminary racing.

The Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod A Feature’s first lap saw Bobby Draper’s 62, the 9T of Logan Thomsen, Lane Cornwell’s 14X and the 99W of Hunter Weber lead the pack. Cornwell moved to second in lap 2 with Gary Saathoff putting the 96 into third and Trevor Noonan moving to fourth in the 66 on lap 3. Josh Pfeiffer in the 33J and Dillon Schultz’s 55D both stopped on the front stretch the next time around for a caution period. 1 lap after the restart Thomsen looped it in turns 1 and 2 and Noonan was sent to the rear for the contact. That made the top 4 Draper, Cornwell, Gunnar Pike in the 25 and Saathoff. Saathoff passed Pike on the restart and Shawn Harker in the 40 moved up to fourth. Harker passed Saathoff the next lap, but Pfeiffer again spun out, negating that pass. Jeremy Baker lost the left rear wheel on his 3J at the same time and went to the pits on the hook. Randy Fox’s 09RX spun in turn 4 on the restart. Harker vaulted all of the way up to first 1 lap after the restart. Saathoff regained third with 6 to go as Pike got back to fourth. Anthony Kobus jumped the 27 up to third with 2 to go and grabbed second on the last lap making the final top 4 Harker, Kobus, Saathoff and Draper.

This was Harker’s 6th victory this season at Eagle Raceway. “That was a good race! The track was a little rough because of all of the rain, but everybody has to race on the same track. You have to just set the car up and get to it. My guys said that the new body we had on the car was bad luck, so we spent a couple of weeks beating the old body back into shape, trying to get it back on the car. It looks a little rough, but hopefully it’s bringing us a little luck” he said. Harker’s sponsors include Speedway Motors, Johnny Saathoff with Jet Racing, Cole with Lakeside Landscaping, VP Heartland Fuels, Tex Cattle, Kyle Vanouver, D-Sign Shop and Patriot Crane and Rigging.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale saw Chantel Bade’s 02 spin out in turn 3 at the start. She was towed to the pits with significant front-end damage. When a lap was officially in the books Michael Wade’s 12, the 24R of Dillon Richards, Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B and the26L of Brint Lemke were the top 4. Lemke moved up to third on lap 2. Lap 3 saw Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth. Lemke took the second spot on the next circuit but lost the spot to Richards the next time around and Armstrong advanced to third. Richards and Armstrong mov ed to first and second on lap 6. Jeff Ware put the 83 into third after another lap as Nick Beckman took fourth in the 22. Armstrong snagged the lead on lap 10. Then last change in the top 4 came the next lap as Ware moved up to second. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Ware, Richards and Beckman.

Win #3 on the year for Armstrong came from the 11th starting spot. He related “We had a bad night last week, but we got it fixed and got back here. The car is still competitive and that’s the main thing. I want to give a special thanks to a couple of sponsors who have helped us out for quite awhile now; Tom Purcell from Icon Pistons and Craig over at Scat Enterprises. Also, my other sponsors Schmidt Machine, NEAPCO and Hummer Contracting. My girlfriend Jo does all of our videotaping and my sister Bonnie who does our pictures. Also, my pit crew John. Make sure to thank Roger, Michelle and Racine for another great night of racing”.

Trevor Baker in the 25!, Nate Thompsen’s 3T, the 86 of Justin Wulf and Jared Deterding in the 13J led the field at the end of lap #1 of the Runner Freight IMCA Modified A Main. Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth on lap 2. Norm Ziegenbein looped his 1Z on lap 5. 1 lap after the restart Brandon Verbeek spun the 4B in turns 1 and 2 for another caution. Wulf moved up to second on lap 7 with Mike Densberger jumping into third in the 81 with Hiatt holding fourth. Densberger moved up to second with 10 to go and Jordan Grabouski passed Hiatt to move the #30 into fourth. Densberger snared the lead with 7 laps remaining. Wulf moved up to second the next lap and Grabouski advanced to third the next time around. Jaxon Saathoff looped the 96 with 2 to go. Hiatt used the restart to retake fourth, making the top 4 at the end Densberger, Wulf, Grabouski and Hiatt.

Victory #3 for Densberger this year came after starting eighth. “The track was a little rough as should be expected with all of the rain that we got, but we left the car free. I stayed patient, kept my nose clean and got the results that we wanted” he stated. Densberger’s sponsors include Johnny Saathoff with Jet Racing, Skytop Towers, Miller Farms, Dynamic Drivelines, Gana Trucking and Excavating, Neeman Refuse, Randy Ward and Jackie and the Niederhaus family.

The ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Feature saw Adam Reifler put the 55 into the lead after the first circuit with Jared Jackson’s 98, the 52D of Devin Bruce and Dan Markham in the 6 close behind. Justin Callender put the 13BS into fourth on lap 2. Steffen Oaks made a huge jump in the 17 the next time around, vaulting up to send. Bruce moved back to third after another circuit with Callender holding fourth. The yellow lights were lit in the corners the next time around for debris on the track. Jackson spun in turn 4 with 10 to go and Oaks left the track. At that time the top 4 were Reifler, Bruce, Callender and Josh Young in the 13J. Young and Callender traded the third position over the next 2 laps with Callender holding the spot and Shawn Hein moving to fourth. Jackson slowed to a stop on the back stretch with 6 laps remaining. On the restart Reifler blew a tire on the restart. That made the top 4 Bruce, Callender, Young and Etherton. Callender grabbed the lead for good with 4 to go. Etherton advanced to third on the last lap making the top 4 Callender, Bruce, Etherton and Young.

This was Callender’s second win of the season here at Eagle. “A big huge thanks to Web Chassis and Dillon Richards for helping me get the car fixed up from the bad week last week. I got pushed into the wall, bent the rear end up and damaged the front end. We did a lot of maintenance this week, but obviously it payed off. Devin Bruce was definitely hard to get around. It was a good little drag race down the back stretch, but we were just a touch faster and got past him. That was a fun race!! It was great getting a second win, and hopefully we can get another since we have a few races left” stated Callender. Callender’s sponsors include Revolution Wraps, Great Clips, Web Chassis, Wheel Specialists and Trouble Maker Choppers.

Nick Bryan grabbed the lead at the start of the Racesaver IMCA Sprint A Feature in the 52 with Rodney Droud’s 40X, the 77D of Keith Dragoo and Boyd Peterson’s 57B rounding out the top 4. Neil Nickolite’s 12N jumped all the way to second on lap 2 with Toby Chapman putting the #7 into fourth on lap 3. Peterson regained fourth the next lap. 1 more circuit was in the books when Nickolite took over the lead and Chapman moved back to fourth. Bryan regained the lead on lap 8. Chapman moved up to third with 8 to go. Ryan Kitchen took over the fourth spot the next time around in the 21 but lost the spot back to Droud. Jason Martin lost the left rear wheel assembly from the 5X with 4 laps remaining. Chapman moved to second on the restart as Kitchen again took the fourth position. Tyler Drueke put the 12 into fourth the net lap, took over third after another circuit and advanced to second the next time around. The last lap saw Mike Boston put the 51 into fourth. At the checkers it was Bryan, Drueke, Chapman and Boston.

This marked the first 2018 win for Bryan at Eagle Raceway in this, just his second appearance at the track this year. “It was actually pretty maneuverable there on the bottom with the berm this week. We came in tonight and checked in a little late, so we didn’t get our starting spot at the front of the heat race, so we really had to work for it. We got a caution in the heat race and got into the invert, so we started on the front row of the Feature tonight. We tightened up the car a little bit and maneuvered around there. Somebody showed their nose a few times, but at the same time I just kept watching the scoreboard, counting down the laps and tried to stay out front. This year we haven’t been racing that much because we lost some sponsors throughout the last few years. That kind of put a hardship on the expenses. We knew that we really wanted to race at the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals. To qualify for the Nationals we knew that we had to race at least 3 shows. I helped out Mike Boston through the year. Looking at the weather over the next 2 months you never know what you’re going to get, so we decided to start racing. We’re still racing on the engine from last year. We ran this engine the last 4 Nationals and it has 50 plus shows on it! We’re waiting on our engine builder to get our other one ready to go. I want to thank Mom and Dad, Rod, Tyler, Nate, Nick and Mike plus everyone else who comes over and helps us get to the races” he stated. Bryan’s sponsors include Finish Line Race Products, Sardeson Racing, Wollen Racing Engines and Onyx Wraps.

Runner Freight and ATV Motorsports present High Roller Rumble next weekend at Eagle Raceway. Blinky the Clown will be there for the kids from 5:30 to 7:30. The annual ‘Hillbilly Slip ‘N Slide’ will be held after the races.

Cancer blog 2

A short update on my visit to University Medical Center in Omaha yesterday.

First I met with Doctor Enke. I must tell you that I really like this man!! He was friendly, playful at the right time and extremely thorough in going over every aspect of my condition.

We went over my complete medical history first, and that of my family. We went over my CT scan, and he informed me of a possible problem shown in it. It wasn’t truly clear, but its possible that the cancer may have spread outside of the prostate capsule. To be sure, he ordered me to go and have an MRI in 2 weeks at Bryan East.

He then proceeded to do that digital exam that most men detest, but he couldn’t confirm anything unfortunately. He assured me that I would not have to go through that again as Doctor LeGrange trusted his findings.

Next an intern came in and went over pretty much the same things.

Then Doctor LeGrange came in. He announced that although Doctor Enke had done the digital exam that both he and another person (I assume another intern as we were never introduced) would both have to do it also. He quickly laughed and said he was joking; I assume because of the death stare I gave him. I told him I wasn’t worried, because he would have had to fight me to do that anyway.

He didn’t stay long, as Doctor Enke had pretty much gone over everything.

So, now I’m just sitting here and waiting to hear from Bryan East as to when I go for the MRI. Then I will have to call and set up a follow-up consultation with the 2 doctors at UNMC.

Basically, I don’t really know much more than when I went in other than the fact that it might possibly worse than we originally thought. But, I’m not too worried about it. As I always say “Worrying about what might happen doesn’t do any good and just drags you down”.

So, that’s it for this blog. I will keep you all informed as soon as I find out some more.

Eagle Raceway 7/21/18

by Greg Soukup
For the third week in a row a very large crowd filled the stands at Eagle Raceway Saturday as Colby Ridge and Casey’s General Store presented Kid’s Night-Black Jack Bike Bonanza. The weather was great and the smiles on the younger fans as they grabbed their share of the 180 bicycles to be given away were even better!
The only major incident in the early action came in the fourth heat for the Valentino’s ICMA Hobby Stocks as a car got into the #85 of Albert Kiihne, forcing it to turn sideways on the front stretch and end up barrel-rolling several times. Troy Dowty in the 17T ended up using Kiihne’s car for a ramp and launched straight up and over it. Neither driver was seriously injured, but both cars were too badly damaged to return to racing the rest of the night.
Rich Flock put the 88F out front of the Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod feature with Joe Schidler’s K00, Cole Wayman in the 18T and Gunnar Pike’s 25 rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw Schidler take over the lead as Wayman also passed Flock for second place. Pike got past Flock on lap 4 for third and Shawn Harker took the fourth spot 2 laps later. Pike moved to second with 9 to go and Harker advanced to third 2 laps after that. The final change in the top 4 came the next lap as Matthew Andrews took fourth. The final top 4 were Schidler, Pike, Harker and Andrews.
This was Schidler’s first win at Eagle Raceway in this, his eighth year in a Sportmod and came from the second row outside on the starting grid. “I couldn’t see what was going on behind me, but I was hoping that it was the case that I was pulling away from the field. The track was pretty good tonight, smooth in spots and tacky in other spots; that suits my driving style. I want to thank my wife and my children first of all, and all of my sponsors” said Schidler. Schidler’s sponsors include Jantzen Law Office, Holland’s Garage, Mark Goldfuss Racing and Fab and Larry Peters.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Ryan Roschewski put the 2R in the lead after lap 1 followed by Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B, the 39C of Colby Kaspar and Casey Moyer’s 38C. Fluckiger spun in turn 4 after contact with another car sending her and Nick Beckman’s 22 to the pits on the hook. Roy Armstrong’s 6R also headed pit side under its own power for repairs. That moved Moyer to third and the 46 of Ryan Gilland to fourth. Lap 3 saw Kaspar move up to first. The next lap Armstrong made hard contact with the implement tire that guards the back pit entrance and he had to be towed back to the pits with significant damage. Gilland passed Moyer on lap 6 but the pass was called back when Dave Carter looped the 2C in turns 1 and 2. There was a big pile-up in turn 3 as Don Hall Jr.’s 92, the 2C of Dave Carter and Brandon Nelson’s 23EN all spun. Gilland took third for good with 8 to go. The next time around Jeff Watts put the 66 into fourth. Moyer stopped at the top of turn 1 with 3 to go. The final top 4 were Kaspar, Roschewski, Gilland and Watts.
This was Kaspar’s first victory also but came in just his second year racing. “I’m enjoying racing the hobby stock a lot! I love racing at Eagle; it’s my favorite track. I started out running the bottom because everyone was pushing up until that caution. Then I saw a car on my outside and found out that was a lot faster lane. I need to thank my Dad and my Mom, the fans and everyone else who supports me” he stated. 10A Fan Shrouds and Charger Chassis are among Kaspar’s sponsors.
The Runner Freight IMCA Modified main event’s first lap saw Bob Zoubek’s 5S pushed into the infield and the caution lights lit. Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein, Trevor Baker in the 25 and Justin Wulf’s 86 led the pack on the first official lap. Johnny Saathoff passed Wulf on lap 3 putting the 96J into fourth. A caution for debris came out the next time around. Baker moved up to second on the restart. Jordan Grabouski jumped all of the way up to second in his #30 two laps later with Baker third and Ziegenbein fourth. Lap 8 saw Baker get passed by both Saathoff and Ziegenbein. Dan Nelson passed Ziegenbein for fourth the next time around. Chad Andersen’s 8C slowed on the front stretch the next circuit for another caution. Grabouski took over the lead on the restart, but both Thompson and Saathoff passed him after another lap. Grabouski got past Saathoff with 9 laps remaining but Jaxon Saathoff looped the 96 to push the action back 1 lap. Johnny Saathoff made contact with Grabouski on the restart, spinning Grabouski out in turns 1 and 2. Saathoff was sent to the pits and Grabouski rejoined the field at the rear. That made the top 4 Thompson, Nelson, Ziegenbein and Zoubek. Nelson got past Thompson on the restart. The next lap saw Mike Densberger put the #81 into fourth. The final circuit saw Zoubek advance to second making the final top 4 Nelson, Zoubek, Thompson and Densberger.
The victory was Nelson’s second in a row at Eagle. He related “It all played out in my favor at the end. I thought for awhile there that I was going to be a fourth-place car. But a couple cars got together, the caution flag came out and I used that to my advantage. I was lucky and was able to pull off the win”. Nelson’s sponsors include Nebraska Hydroseeding, Scott Pope, Goldfuss Repair, Nelson Tree Service, Popeye Racing Engines, Curtis Construction, Grand Avenue Bar and Grill, Jordan Grabouski Racing, VP Heartland Racing Fuels and Fastenal.
Jeremy Shell’s 17S, the 98 of Jared Jackson, Trenten Fugett in the 3T and Noah Boller’s 26B were the top 4 after the first circuit for the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Feature. Fugett moved to second on lap 2 and Boller took over third. The next lap saw Fugett grab the lead, Boller move to second, Shell third with the 27W of Daniel Morris hold fourth. Morris and the 88K of RJ Maas both passed Shell and Morris the next time around. Shawn Hein jumped to third with 9 to go as Ramsey Meyer put the 21R into fourth. Hein advanced to second the next time around and Boller regained fourth. Josh Young got past Boller with 2 to go, putting the 13J into fourth. The top 4 were Fugett, Hein, Morris and Young.
Fugett also recorded his second consecutive victory at Eagle Raceway and said “That’s pretty great! I started 7th and got to the lead. I couldn’t see behind me, so I just ran as hard as I could and hoped that nobody got around me”. Fugett’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait and Tackle and Hamilton Construction.
The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car Feature saw Nate Weiler’s 4W lead the initial circuit followed by Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 93 of Ryan King and Josh Riggins in the 14J. King took over second momentarily on lap 2 but lost the spot to Riggins after another circuit. Lap 6 saw Kaleb Johnson put the #22 into fourth and move to third on lap 9 as Adam Gullion advanced the #91 into fourth. King looped it in turn 1 on lap 11. Johnson took the lead on the restart and Gullion followed him into second the next time around. Shon Pointer spun the 20P in turn 4 with 11 to go, collecting Toby Chapman’s #7 sending it flipping into the front stretch. Chapman was not seriously injured. Shayle Bade’s 03 was also involved and all 3 were towed to the pits. Jason Danley jumped up to third on the restart in the 4X. Tyler Drueke made the final change in the top 4 with 9 to go when he put the 12 into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkers with Johnson first, Gullion second, Danley third and Drueke fourth.
Johnson has been visiting America’s Home Track this season regularly and finally notched his first W there in just his second full season in the Racesaver class. He stated “We’ve been coming here quite a bit this year. We’ve been struggling a lot here, but we threw a couple of different things at the car throughout our times here this year and luckily got to start closer to the front. These guys gave me a really, fast race car tonight and I was just able to drive the thing. I was a little worried under that yellow. I knew there are a lot of good cars here, and that’s the reason that we come here. The competition level is second to none! I looked at the board and saw Adam was behind me and I heard it over the Raceceiver. I kind of figured that he was going to try and throw a slider on me. I tried to just power around the top and keep my momentum up and lead the rest of the way”. Johnson’s sponsors include Medical Machining Specialists, Mastell Brothers Trailer Service Inc., Hochstein Farms, GRP Motorsports, Big Al’s Die Cast Racing, Merle Johnson Farm Toys, Kat’s Hog Heaven, Hegg Realtors, Dave’s Lawn Care and Landscaping and Snyder Logging and Tree Service.

Eagle Raceway 7/14/18

Sunny skies and mid-80’s turned to a cool, clear evening for Full House Frenzy-Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Great Clips, Nebraska Lottery and Hoosier. The track was tacky and fast, with 3-wide racing thrilling the huge crowd.

The only serious incident came in the second heat for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks when Tyler Jackson got forced high into the implement tire that guards the entrance to the pits. Jackson slid sideways full-blast into the tire. He was not seriously hurt, but his car was damaged beyond repair.

The first lap of the Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod A Main had Joe Schidler’s K00, the 62 of Bobby Draper, Dion Kovar in the 18 and Anthony Kobus’ 27 out front. Terry Callender looped the 5T in turns 3 & 4 on lap 3 for a caution. Kobus moved to second on the restart with Draper third and Kovar fourth. Shawn Harker suffered a flat right rear on lap 5 and the yellow flag was unfurled again. Kovar advanced to third on lap 6. Josh Pfeiffer put the 33J into fourth on lap 9 when Draper slowed. Kobus grabbed the lead a couple of laps later as Matthew Andrews took over fourth in the 22. Randy Fox’s 09RX spun in turn four with 8 to go. Kovar slowed momentarily with 6 laps left, moving the 30T of Taylor Metz into fourth. The final top 4 were Kobus, Schidler, Andrews and Metz.

This was Kobus’ first win at Eagle Raceway this season, coming from the 8th spot on the starting grid. “I took the lead with 10 laps to go and ended up winning. The car was really good; high side or low side, it didn’t matter where we went it seemed like it worked pretty good tonight. We really needed that after a couple of bad nights here. I want to thank Razor Chassis; they’re the ones who build the car. Demon Decals make the car look good every night” he said. Kobus’ sponsors also include Albright Lawn Care, Kobus Well Drilling, Jensen Photography, Final Touch Detailing, Billie’s Bar and Mid-Nebraska Grading and Demo.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next on the card for their finale. Chantel Bade’s 02 led the first circuit with Mark McKinney’s 23, the 38C of Casey Moyer and Michael Wade in the 12 close behind. Moyer passed McKinney for second on lap 2 and Tyler Saathoff put the 16T into fourth.  Saathoff jumped up to second the next lap as Ryan Gilland moved the 46 into fourth. A car spun in turn 3 the next lap and was towed to the pits. Saathoff snagged the lead on the restart with Gilland second, Bade third and Moyer holding fourth. Jeff Ware vaulted up to third with 12 to go in the #83 with Colby Kaspar moving to fourth in his #39C. Bade spun in turn 4 with 10 to go for another caution. 1 lap after the restart Ware took the second spot and moved into first the next lap. Another circuit was in the books when Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth. Armstrong took over third on the final lap making the top 4 Ware, Saathoff, Armstrong and Gilland.

I thanked Ware for making my job easier as he was parked next to Kobus, to which he responded, “We talked about it before racing started”. This was Wares 6th victory this season at Eagle. I mentioned putting a bounty on him. “No! No! That brings out the bad in everybody. The track was fast tonight; FAST!! It was another win for the car, the crew and my sponsors”. Ware’s sponsors include Amy and Gary Wergin Motorsports, Dewine Mechanical, Kula Repair T & R Auto Repair and Demon Decals.

There was an 8-car pileup in turns 1 and 2 at the start of the Runner Freight IMCA Modified A Feature. Bob Zoubek’s 5S, the 19XX of Brandon Spanjer, Dan Nelson in the 94 and Aaron Pella’s 3A led the first official circuit. Tommy Defreece’s 2X slammed the front stretch wall after pirouetting out of turn 4 on lap 2, lighting the yellow lights in the corners. The restart was called back because of debris. Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth on the restart. Nelson took over the lead the next lap with Jordan Grabouski moving the #30 into fourth. Lap 8 saw Grabouski advance into third. Andersen advanced to third with 9 to go as Grabouski moved up to second making the top 4 Nelson, Grabouski, Andersen and Zoubek.

This was Nelson’s first win in 2018 at Eagle Raceway, starting fourth. He stated “It got pretty tight there at the start of the race. I don’t know exactly what happened, but I’m glad I didn’t get tied up in it. It was rough getting into 1 but smooth on the bottom. It was rough around 3 and 4 when you got up around the cushion. I followed a couple of cars around the bottom there at the start but figured I wasn’t going to pass them by following them, so I went to the cushion in 3 and 4 and was able to get around them”. Nelson’s sponsors include Nebraska Hydroseeding, Scott Pope, Goldfuss Repair, Nelson Tree Service, Popeye Racing Engines, Curtis Construction, Grand Avenue Bar and Grill, Jordan Grabouski Racing, Heartland and Fastenal.

The ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Main saw Noah Boller’s 28B, Jared Jackson in the 98, Trenten Fugett’s 3T and the 6 of Dan Markham the first 4 after 1 lap. Fugett passed Jackson for second on lap 2 with Justin Callender jumping into third in his 13BS on lap 3 as Jackson fell to fourth. Markham moved back to fourth after another circuit. Shawn Hein put the 5H into 4th with 9 to go but lost the spot to Josh Young’s 13J 5 laps later. Fugett grabbed the lead with 2 to go as Young passed Callender making the final top 4 Fugett, Boller, Young and Callender.

This marked Fugett’s second win this year at Eagle after starting fourth. “It was a really good race. There was a lot of good competition up there! They gave me a really good battle for first. The track was outstanding tonight; probably one of the best tracks we’ve had this year. I’d like to thank Zach and Drake Bohlmeyer, Dillon Richards and Dillon’s step-dad Wade. They all do so much for me that nobody sees”. Fugett’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait and Tackle and Hamilton Construction.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Main saw Keith Dragoo’s 77D first back to the flag stand with Tim Hilfiker’s 20, the 12N of Neil Nickolite and Ryan Kitchen in the 21 rounding out the top 4. Tige Jensen’s 12T stopped on the front stretch on lap 2 and the yellow flag came out. Kitchen moved up to third on the restart. Shon Pointer put the 20P into fourth the next lap. Adam Gullion took over the fourth spot on lap 8 in the #91. Mike Boston’s 51 spun to a stop at the top of turn 1 the next time around. Kitchen grabbed second on the restart. Gullion moved up to third on lap 11. 2 laps later Kitchen took the lead from Dragoo. Gullion and Pointer both moved up 1 spot as Gullion tried to reel Kitchen in. Gullion made his move with 3 to go, passing Kitchen for the lead as Jason Danley moved to fourth in the 4X. Gullion proceeded to hold off Kitchen to the end making the final top 4 Gullion, Kitchen, Pointer and Danley.

Victory #2 this year at Eagle for Gullion. “We’ve been struggling this year and we’ve had just some stupid stuff happen. I told my guys last week ‘Hey, we’ve done about all of the dumb stuff that we can do, so now It’s all out of the way. Now we just need to finish where we deserve’. I told my guys while we were getting ready for the feature and setting the car up ‘It’s going to be the old Eagle that it was before’. They wanted to set up for the bottom and drag race. But I said ‘The bottom is going to be gone in about 12 laps, so let’s pound the fence and hopefully we can stay with people early and then late let’s see if we’ve got something for them’. On the buzz lap I thought ‘Man, we’re too good right now’, but the car just kept getting better and better. I ran the whole race up on the fence and getting into 1 there were some ruts, but I knew how to get through them wide open. Ryan didn’t, because he’d been running the bottom the whole race. I actually got by him, but then his Dad told him to go to the top and I was thinking ‘I’ve got 1 shot at this because he’s not going in hard. I’ve got to go through the middle and try to get by him’. I didn’t get as good a restart as I needed to and he kind of got away from me. I went to the middle and kind of let him drive back by me. He started to drive away from me and I thought to myself ‘Just make some laps and see if we can get to traffic and do something with him’. We were fortunate enough late in the race that we were making a little bit better time on the top than he was. I think that was just the experience from running the top the whole race. But, I was able to slide him. I heard him coming low and I went straight into 3 and kind of slid myself. I got back to the top and just tried to make good laps”. Gullion’s sponsors include Walker Performance, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Maxim, Weld Wheels, Filley Custom Powder Coating, Cheetah Racing Engines, Pro Shocks, Speedway Shock Technology, Butler, Simpson and PT Steering Gear Service.

The best laid plans oft go astray!!

When I first started thinking about retiring from my full-time job I thought I made sure that everything was in place so that Linda and I would have enough to carry us through. I calculated my social security, Linda’s disability and what I could earn doing my part-time jobs. I compared those against what our monthly bills would be and figured we wouldn’t have to touch my 401K from work unless there was a very large emergency. Well, as much as I hate to bring up bad news, that emergency may well have arisen.

The other day on Facebook I posted that I was having some testing done and asked for good thoughts for a good outcome. Those weren’t the first tests I’ve undergone recently. Let me back up a month or so to catch you all up.

I was having what would politely be called “Plumbing Problems”. I scheduled and appointment with my personal doctor. He prescribed a PSA test and I went home. His office called and informed me that the PSA level was elevated. I already had an appointment to go and visit with my urologist; a yearly visit to follow up on a surgery I had done years ago.

While visiting with the urologist’s assistant about the “problems” she said that I needed to leave a urine sample and blood sample. A few days later she called and let me know that there was blood present in the urine and that my PSA level was up even higher! So, they scheduled an inspection of my bladder and a biopsy of my prostate be done. I had those completed and waited for the results.

The bladder inspection showed some minor problems, but nothing serious. The biopsy came back confirming my worst fears; prostate cancer!!!

So, the urologist’s office scheduled a CT scan and bone scan; those were the tests that I mentioned on Facebook. This past Wednesday I again went to the urologist’s office; this time to speak to the doctor himself.

Now; settle down!! The results aren’t as bad as they could have been. The biopsies showed that the cancer is only aggressive between a 7 and 8, on a scale of 6-10. The bone scan showed that the cancer hadn’t spread to the bones!! He offered me some choices as to how to proceed. I could take my pick from 2 different ways to put the cancer on hold, so to speak. I immediately disregarded those as I told him “I want to be cured, not just put off the inevitable”. He told me “You have the right attitude about this, and you are rare in doing that”. He also said that as young as I am and since I’m in good health, curing is the correct option. Evidently quite a lot of people either are in denial or are just plain dumb!!! I may be old, fat and bald, but I ain’t STUPID!!!!

The other 2 choices were to get the cancer cured, and those 2 are the main reason for this blog. My choices are to either have the prostate surgically removed or undergo a series of 43 radiation treatments (5 days a week for 9 weeks).

The possible side-effects of the surgery option truly scare me!! Those of you who really know me know that I don’t scare easily, but the possibility of those have really shaken me!! There may be some minor side-effects of the radiation therapy, but they are just that; minor, and will be gone once the treatments are over.

I am turning to you to ask a favor. I want to hear from those of you who have experienced either the radiation treatments or prostate removal in the past couple of years so that I can use those experiences to gauge which option to take. I want direct experiences please, and only first-hand. Also, it’s important that the experience be in the past couple of years as I am told that many, MANY advances have been made in the radiation therapy lately.

I appreciate any and all help that you can give me in reaching my decision.

Thank you!

Eagle Raceway 7/7/18

Just like this great country of ours, Freedom Fest presented by Hotsy, Budweiser and Froggy 98 could be put off but not put down. Last week the event had to be called after the second heat race for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks due to heavy rain.

Fast forward to this past Saturday and you could not ask for better weather. Afternoon highs in the upper 80’s gave way to a cool and breezy evening. 158 race teams were on hand to provide the preliminary fireworks. The second largest crowd of the season filled the stands and saw some great racing action.

Sadly, there were 2 significant incidents in the preliminary action. Trevor Grossenbacher and Joey Danley were battling for position in the fourth heat for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars when Grossenbacher got over a wheel of Danley’s car and went for a set of wild snap-rolls. Both cars were badly damaged, but Danley was able to make repairs and get back out for the B Feature. Unfortunately, Grossenbacher was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with compression fractures in his spine. He will be out for a while recuperating.

In the B Feature for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks there was a caution thrown. As front stretch official Tim Kozak was putting the cone on the track he was struck by a car. He was life-flighted to Bryan Hospital in Lincoln. He was said to be awake and alert. As of the writing of this article no official word on his condition has been released.

The initial A Main was for the Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmods. Lap #1 saw Rich Flock’s 88F, the 18 of Dion Kovar, Adam Vrbka in the 7V and Mike Scheinost’s 51 out front. Gary Saathoff’s 96 stopped on lap 2 and the yellow flag was brought out. Scott Bivens used the restart to put the S56 into fourth and move up to third the next lap. Trevor Noonan cracked the top 4 on lap 6 in his #66. Shawn Harker passed Noonan on lap 9 to put the 40 into fourth as Kovar snagged the lead. Harker jumped up to second the next lap as Bivens held onto third and Flock fell to fourth. Lee Horky advanced his #7 into fourth the next time around. 1 more lap was in the books when Harker took over the top spot. Flock looped his racer on the front stretch with 3 to go. Noonan passed Horky on the restart but lost the spot back to Horky the next lap. The final top four were Harker, Kovar, Bivens and Horky.

This was Harker’s 5th victory of the season at Eagle Raceway. “I got to start 11th tonight; inside the 6th row instead of outside because we dropped in the points 1 spot. We kept looking around for a full moon tonight because it was just one of those nights. It was crazy! The track had a lot of character in it tonight. All I can say is it was crazy. We haven’t even gotten the sponsors on the new car after we had that pretty good wreck a couple of weeks ago. We’re still recovering from that yet. The car took a pretty good lick but Johnny Saathoff and Jet Racing are a top-notch organization down there. They build some of the best cars that you could ever drive, and some of the safest. I’m very thankful for my relationship with them” he said. Harker’s sponsors include Speedway Motors, Johnny Saathoff with Jet Racing, Cole with Lakeside Landscaping, VP Heartland Fuels, Tex Cattle, Kyle Vanouver, D-Sign Shop and Patriot Crane and Rigging.

The next A Feature was for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. The lead on lap 1 went to Chantel Bade’s 02 followed by Nick Beckman in the 22, the 13T of Tyler Jackson and Brooke Fluckiger in the 2B. The yellow lights in the corners were lit on lap 2 when Anthony Petersen’s 38P and the 17T of Try Dowty both stopped. Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth on the restart. The yellow flag flew again the next time around as Brett Saathoff’s 11B lost the left rear and Bade spun out. At that point the top 4 were Beckman, Jackson, Armstrong and the 83 of Jeff Ware. Armstrong moved up to second on lap 5 and Ware advanced to third. Ware jumped past Armstrong and Beckman to grab the top spot on lap 9. The next circuit saw Armstrong also pass Beckman and Albert Kiihne’s 85 take the fourth spot. Kiihne moved up to third with 3 to go. The next lap saw the 2R of Ryan Roschewki spin out in turns 3 and 4. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish, despite furious runs at the lead by Armstrong who could get alongside Ware, but never snag the lead. It was Ware, Armstrong, Kiihne and Beckman the top 4.

“That was hard racing! You’ve got to appreciate a guy who can race hard and clean like that. I think we only touched one time in the last 7 laps. The track was an arm-worker tonight. Man! I was all over the steering wheel, that’s for sure. It was different around the track. It was slick in and rough off, or rough in and slick off. There were 2 different lines to run in and I saw Roy go to the high side and run some pretty good laps. So, when I got the lead I knew I had to go up and take away his line” stated Ware. Ware’s sponsors include Amy and Gary Wergin Motorsports, Dewine Mechanical, Kula Repair T & R Auto Repair and Demon Decals.

The Runner Freight IMCA Modified A Main saw Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 25! of Trevor Baker, Rik Gropp in the V45 and the 86 of Justin Wulf out front on the first lap. Peter Shoup spun the 79 in turn 3 on lap 3 and then looped it again on the restart. A car hit the cone on the next restart and then on the next try there was a big pileup in turn 4. Baker took the lead when action resumed finally with Gropp second, Chad Andersen’s 8C third and Thompson fourth. Wulf got fourth back the next lap. 1 more circuit was in the books when Andersen passed Gropp. Jordan Grabouski put the 30 into fourth on lap 7 and moved to third the next lap with Shane Hiatt putting the 21H into fourth. Grabouski advanced to second with 11 laps remaining, taking the lead after 2 more laps. Hiatt moved up to third the next time around. Norm Ziegenbein spun the1Z with 7 to go. Rodney Stopak’s 1Rs, the 3A of Aaron Pella and Mike Lineberry in the 72 all spun in turns 1 and 2 on the restart. Wulf regained fourth momentarily with 6 to go, but the pass was negated when Baker spun out in turns 1 & 2. The final top four remained unchanged to the finish with Grabouski first, Andersen second, Hiatt third and Gropp fourth.

Grabouski was racing with a heavy heart after having lost his newborn son earlier in the week. “When we started the race people were crashing out, so we had to keep our nose clean. We had the fastest car, but we needed to wait and strike when the time was right. We made the right decisions in traffic, kept our nose clean and managed to bring home the W. We had a really good car tonight. Hats off to everybody who helps me out on the car. It’s been a tough week for us, and we really could use this win. I want to thank my family, my wife and everyone else who supports me. Through tough times you realize how much support and love you have” related Grabouski.

Noah Boller’s 26B, the 52D of Devin Bruce, Braydon Thornton’s 21T and the 55 of Adam Reifler were the top 4 after the initial lap of the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A. Daniel Morris’ 22B stopped on lap 2 for a caution. Reifler moved up to third on the restart and took over second after 1 more circuit as Shawn Hein put the 5H into third and Dillon Richards moved the 18X into fourth. Those moves were called back when Thornton’s car rolled in turn 2 brought out the red flag. Bruce went to the pits during this time, making the top 4 Boller, Hein, Richards and the 13J of Josh Young. Hein took over the lead with 9 laps remaining. Richards followed him into second 2 laps later. Richards passed Hein with 5 circuits left, lost the position back to Hein with 2 to go but got back past him for the victory. The top 4 were Richards, Hein, Boller and Young.

This was Richards’ first appearance at Eagle Raceway this year in a sport compact as he had been competing in the hobby stock class. He said “The track was a little rough, but it was good and racy. So, I won’t complain when it’s like this. It was close between Shawn and me. I was really nervous, because I didn’t know if I could get him or not but transponders don’t lie! I want to thank my step-dad Wade. He builds the cars and sets them up for me and Zach and Drake also help me out. Also Trenten Fugett and everybody else who does their part”. Richards’ sponsors include Sutton Repair and Global Repair.

Last was the A Feature for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. Keith Dragoo put the 77D out front of the first circuit with the 20 of Tim Hilfiker, Boyd Peterson’s 57B and the 1 of Doug Lovegrove rounding out the top 4. Paul Hendrickson’s 19JR stopped in turn 1 on lap 2 with Jason Danley’s 4X making contact and flipping. Danley was not seriously injured, but his car was damaged too badly to continue.  Lovegrove took advantage of the restart to move up to third. Ryan Kitchen put the 21 into fourth the next time around. Gene Ackland passed Kitchen the next lap, putting the 14G into fourth but lost the spot to Peterson. Tyler Drueke joined the battle for fourth, taking the #12 into that position after another lap. Drueke advanced to second on lap 7 to go as Lovegrove moved to third. Lap 11 saw Joey Danley take fourth in the 14. Danley rocketed into first the next time around with Drueke holding second and Lovegrove falling to fourth. 5 laps remained as Lovegrove advanced to third and Kitchen again took over the fourth spot. Danley lengthened his lead to the checkers to take the win with Drueke second, Lovegrove third and Kitchen fourth.

This was Danley’s second win in a row and third on the year, coming from 18th on the starting grid after transferring from the B. “We definitely earned it tonight! We had a rough heat race and got caught up in a wreck. We had a lot of work to do to be able to make it out for the B Feature and somehow made it all of the way to the front of the A. I’m just as shocked as everybody else is; I did NOT expect that!! We definitely had a rocket for a car though. The moisture stayed in the track all night, which is always good because we save on tires that way. It’s hard to ask for anything better when you have 150 plus cars here every week” stated Danley. Danley’s sponsors include Heiserman Flooring, Nissen Hardwood Floors, Automotive Services, Russell Shoulders Racing Engines, CleanRite Sweeping, Empire Fencing and Complete Window and Door Solutions.

Next Saturday sees Great Clips, The Nebraska Lottery and The Blaze 104.1 present Full House Frenzy-Fan Appreciation Night at Eagle Raceway. Twinky the Clown will be there from 5:30 to 7:30 for the kids.
