Most dirt
tracks would have cancelled the show when they got a 20-minute rain shower
during hot laps, but the Eagle Raceway track prep crew saved the racing surface
so that the crowd and the 151 teams that towed to compete could enjoy Color Me
Lucky Night, presented by Runner Freight and Accelerated GraphX. Once the
clouds passed the track was fast and the racing tremendous.
The only
serious incident in the preliminary events came in the B Feature for the IMCA
Sprint Racesavers when the 12T of Tige Jensen got crossed up and Trevor
Grossenbacher’s 35 ran over Jensen’s left front wheel and went airborne.
Neither driver was seriously hurt, but both cars were too damaged to continue.
The Hoosier
Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod A Feature saw Mike Scheinost’s 51, Gunnar Pike in the
25, the K00 of Joe Schidler and Nick Morris’ 11H out front of the pack on lap
#1. Lap 2 saw Scott Bivens put the S56 up to third. The yellow flag flew on lap
4 when Randy Fox’s 09RX stopped in the entrance to the pits. Pike grabbed the
lead on the restart as he, Bivens and Schidler all passed Scheinost. The next circuit
saw Shawn Harker move to fourth in the 40. Schidler took over the second spot
on lap 6. Another caution came out the next time around as debris was spotted
on the track and Schidler headed to the pits, putting Mary Lenz in the 17 in
the fourth spot. Bivens took over the lead with 11 to go. Harker advanced to
second the next lap and try as he might, he could not manage to pass Bivens.
The top 4 were Bivens, Harker, Pike and Lenz.
Bivens’ win
came from the 6th spot on the starting grid. “It’s been a year and a
half since my last win, at least. I should have had one last year, maybe, but
we blew up. But, we just keep chugging along; we’re getting faster this year,
so maybe we’ll do this some more! It wasn’t that easy though. Shawn, he’s a
good wheel man and he made me earn it tonight. The track was a little rough
after the rain, but we won so I thought it was awesome. There’s a lot of people
who have helped me out for a long time now that I need to thank. Alan Auto
Sports, my parents and my son who gives me crap about not winning features, but
he wins them. Now I’m 1 up on him this year” Bivens related. Scott’s sponsors
include Sardeson Racing, Aero Wheels, Dominator Products, Bivens Vinyl Siding,
Spyder Race Cars and the D-Sign Shop.
The
Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature’s first lap saw Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B out
front followed by the 22 of Nick Beckman, Khrysta Stransky in the 39 and Colby
Kaspar’s 39C. Beckman grabbed the lead on lap 2. The next lap saw Stransky take
over second and the 66 of Jeff Watts move up to fourth. Watts advanced to third
the next time around. Dillon Richards cracked the top 4 after another lap in
the 24R. The yellow lights came on in the corners the next circuit as a car
spun in turn 4. Tyler Saathoff moved into the fourth position with 10 to go.
Jeff Ware jumped the 83 up to third 2 laps later as Stransky held onto fourth.
Saathoff again grabbed the fourth spot the next time around. Ware advanced to
second with 2 laps remaining. The final change in the top 4 came on the last
lap s Saathoff took over third, making the final top 4 Beckman, Ware, Saathoff
and Watts.
This was
Beckman’s first win in quite a while also, coming from outside the second row.
“I’d say it’s been 4 years since I’ve finally been on the front stretch there.
It feels really good to be back in a hobby stock. I’m not going to lie; I think
that I had to adjust the driver more than I did the car. But, we’re here now
and hopefully we’re here to stay. I knew that I had to get out front and run
away. I’m just glad that I was able to hold off all of the fast drivers. Apparently,
I was just a little faster than them tonight” he said. Beckman’s sponsors
include ServicePRO Carpet Cleaning, Performance 66, KSR Racing, Goldfuss
Racing, D-Sign Shop and the Beverage Connection.
Brandon
Spanjer’s 19X, the 72 of Mike Lineberry, Justin Wulf in the 86 and the 7 of Bob
Ruisinger led the field after 1 circuit of the A Main for the Runner Freight
ICA Modifieds. The field was competing for a $1,000 to win prize, thanks to
additional funds provided by Runner Freight. Mike Densberger passed Ruisinger
on lap 2 to put the 81 into fourth, only to be passed by Jordan Grabouski’s 30
the next time around. Grabouski passed Wulf after another lap and Densberger
also got past Wulf after another lap was in the books. Densberger continued to
advance, moving up to third. Grabouski snagged the lead on lap 9. From there he
continued to stretch his lead until Spanjer spun on the front stretch after
contact with the 96 of Jaxon Saathoff. That made the top 4 Grabouski,
Densberger, Wulf and the 94 of Dan Nelson. The top 4 remained unchanged from
there to the finish.
Unlike the
evening’s previous 2 winners, Grabouski is no stranger to Victory Lane at Eagle
Raceway this year. He posted his fifth win of the year tonight, after starting
10th. “I had a good car tonight that could move around and get
through traffic really well. The biggest thing was keeping my nose clean. When
you win $1000, it’s really cool and a great night. I want to thank Runner
Freight for the added money to win, and for supporting the modified class here
at Eagle. It’s awesome to see someone care so much about racing. It makes me
want to keep coming back here and see what happens! The track was difficult
tonight after the rain, but everyone had the same track to race on” stated
Grabouski.
The ATV IMCA
Sport Compact finale had Dan Markham’s 6, the 22B of Daniel Morris, Tyler
Masek’s 23 and Tommy Etherton in the 24 out front on lap 1. Etherton jumped up
to second on lap 2 as Trenten Fugett put the 3T into fourth. Fugett passed
Etherton the next lap and grabbed the lead the next time around with Etherton
holding second, Markham third and Morris fourth. Masek took over the third spot
on lap 5. Another circuit was in the books when Kyle Owen moved the 10K into
fourth. Etherton passed Fugett with 7 to go and retained the lead when Fugett
lost a tire and brought out the caution. At that time, it was Etherton,
Markham, Owen and Masek. A lap after the restart Steffen Oaks passed Masek,
putting the 30K into fourth, but lost the spot back to Masek after another lap.
Jeff Creek’s 18X stopped in turn 4 with 4 to go, and the yellow lights were lit
again. Oaks regained the fourth spot 1 lap after the restart, moved to third
the next lap and grabbed second on the final circuit. The final top 4 were
Etherton, Oaks, Markham and Owen.
This was
Etherton’s first 2018 victory at Eagle, coming from 6th. He said “It was
definitely a rougher track tonight after the rain, and that usually suits my
strengths. I’m used to the ruts and I love just bouncing on through them to see
how quickly I can get up to the front. The rain definitely softened the track
up, but Roger puts on a hell of a show! It means so much to have all of these
great competitors come out here to Eagle. We usually get the biggest car counts
in the sport compacts in the state, and that’s awesome. I tried to diamond going
into turn 1 at the start, shot through there and the next thing I knew I could
see the leader. I’d like to thank Kenny Johnson, my Mom and Dad and all of my
friends for all of their support”. Etherton’s sponsors include G & R
Graphics, MC Larkins, Belmont Husky Service and CBS Signs.
At the start
of the IMCA Sprint Racesaver A Main a total of 5 cars ended up spun or stopped
near turn 4. The 4W of Nate Weiler, Stu Snyder’s 5, the 14G of Gene Ackland,
Doug Lovegrove in the #1 and Shon Pointers 20P all were involved. This brought
out a complete restart with only Lovegrove able to rejoin the battle. Jason Miller led the first official lap in
his #77 with Clint Benson’s 100, the 17 of Dan Satriano and Tim Hilfiker in the
20 close behind. Benson moved to the lead on lap 2 with Mike Boston leaping all
of the way into second in the 51. Satriano advanced to third the next time
around with Jason Danley taking the 4X into fourth after another circuit. Tyler Drueke took the 12 past Danley for
fourth on lap 7. The first caution of the race came on lap 8 when Miller spun
to the infield. At that time, it was Benson, Boston, Satriano and Drueke the
top 4. Boston used his favorite line around Eagle Raceway, the VERY top, to
pass Benson on the restart as Drueke moved up to third. 3 more laps were done
when Drueke moved up to second and Danley again took fourth. Hilfiker looped it
with 11 laps remaining for the final caution of the evening. Danley moved up to
third with 10 to go, but from there to the finish nothing slowed Boston except
lapped traffic as he held on to win with Drueke second, Danley third and Benson
fourth.
This was
Boston’s first win this season, after having visited victory lane twice in a
row last year. His charge came from outside the fifth row at the start. When I
spoke with Boston, I said, “It’s about time, Mike!” and inquired what he
thought of the race. In typical Mike Boston fashion, he said “It’s about time,
Mike!”. He continued by saying “Tonight was my kind of track. The rougher the
better!! I mean, sometimes it can bite you, but it is what it is. Roger did a
good job getting it to where we could race on it at all. It was rough, but
there was a LOT of water on there after the rain. We had a great car tonight.
Last week we had just a 7-cylinder motor. Zach Woods forgot to connect the 8th
one up for us, so we ran the whole night on 7 cylinders. It was just one of
those deals; nobody’s fault of course. They got it fixed and the car ran
great!! My hat is off to Zach at Speedway Engines though. I’ve been with that
guy for 20 years now. I started out with Eckley Racing Engines when he worked
for Jay, then he bought out Jay. Then Zach went out on his own until Speedway
bought out Zach and he’s still working for them. He’s my one engine builder and
I couldn’t be happier. There’s not a whole lot of people who can say that
they’re still with the same engine builder that they started out with 20 years
ago. And he’s who I’m going to finish
with! I also want to mention Matt Talbot Kitchens. They are a great bunch of
people and working for a great cause. I can’t thank them enough for what they
do and if we can help the out, then that’s what its all about”. Boston’s
sponsors include Moock Trucking and Boss Cleaning.
