Fast forward
to this past Saturday and you could not ask for better weather. Afternoon highs
in the upper 80’s gave way to a cool and breezy evening. 158 race teams were on
hand to provide the preliminary fireworks. The second largest crowd of the season
filled the stands and saw some great racing action.
Sadly, there
were 2 significant incidents in the preliminary action. Trevor Grossenbacher
and Joey Danley were battling for position in the fourth heat for the Racesaver
IMCA Sprint Cars when Grossenbacher got over a wheel of Danley’s car and went
for a set of wild snap-rolls. Both cars were badly damaged, but Danley was able
to make repairs and get back out for the B Feature. Unfortunately,
Grossenbacher was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with compression
fractures in his spine. He will be out for a while recuperating.
In the B Feature
for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks there was a caution thrown. As front
stretch official Tim Kozak was putting the cone on the track he was struck by a
car. He was life-flighted to Bryan Hospital in Lincoln. He was said to be awake
and alert. As of the writing of this article no official word on his condition
has been released.
The initial
A Main was for the Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmods. Lap #1 saw Rich Flock’s
88F, the 18 of Dion Kovar, Adam Vrbka in the 7V and Mike Scheinost’s 51 out front.
Gary Saathoff’s 96 stopped on lap 2 and the yellow flag was brought out. Scott
Bivens used the restart to put the S56 into fourth and move up to third the
next lap. Trevor Noonan cracked the top 4 on lap 6 in his #66. Shawn Harker
passed Noonan on lap 9 to put the 40 into fourth as Kovar snagged the lead.
Harker jumped up to second the next lap as Bivens held onto third and Flock
fell to fourth. Lee Horky advanced his #7 into fourth the next time around. 1 more
lap was in the books when Harker took over the top spot. Flock looped his racer
on the front stretch with 3 to go. Noonan passed Horky on the restart but lost
the spot back to Horky the next lap. The final top four were Harker, Kovar,
Bivens and Horky.
This was
Harker’s 5th victory of the season at Eagle Raceway. “I got to start
11th tonight; inside the 6th row instead of outside
because we dropped in the points 1 spot. We kept looking around for a full moon
tonight because it was just one of those nights. It was crazy! The track had a
lot of character in it tonight. All I can say is it was crazy. We haven’t even
gotten the sponsors on the new car after we had that pretty good wreck a couple
of weeks ago. We’re still recovering from that yet. The car took a pretty good
lick but Johnny Saathoff and Jet Racing are a top-notch organization down
there. They build some of the best cars that you could ever drive, and some of
the safest. I’m very thankful for my relationship with them” he said. Harker’s
sponsors include Speedway Motors,
Johnny Saathoff with Jet Racing, Cole with Lakeside Landscaping, VP Heartland
Fuels, Tex Cattle, Kyle Vanouver, D-Sign Shop and Patriot Crane and Rigging.
The next A Feature was for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks.
The lead on lap 1 went to Chantel Bade’s 02 followed by Nick Beckman in the 22,
the 13T of Tyler Jackson and Brooke Fluckiger in the 2B. The yellow lights in
the corners were lit on lap 2 when Anthony Petersen’s 38P and the 17T of Try
Dowty both stopped. Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth on the restart. The
yellow flag flew again the next time around as Brett Saathoff’s 11B lost the
left rear and Bade spun out. At that point the top 4 were Beckman, Jackson, Armstrong
and the 83 of Jeff Ware. Armstrong moved up to second on lap 5 and Ware
advanced to third. Ware jumped past Armstrong and Beckman to grab the top spot
on lap 9. The next circuit saw Armstrong also pass Beckman and Albert Kiihne’s
85 take the fourth spot. Kiihne moved up to third with 3 to go. The next lap saw
the 2R of Ryan Roschewki spin out in turns 3 and 4. The top 4 remained unchanged
to the finish, despite furious runs at the lead by Armstrong who could get
alongside Ware, but never snag the lead. It was Ware, Armstrong, Kiihne and
Beckman the top 4.
“That was
hard racing! You’ve got to appreciate a guy who can race hard and clean like that.
I think we only touched one time in the last 7 laps. The track was an arm-worker
tonight. Man! I was all over the steering wheel, that’s for sure. It was
different around the track. It was slick in and rough off, or rough in and slick
off. There were 2 different lines to run in and I saw Roy go to the high side
and run some pretty good laps. So, when I got the lead I knew I had to go up and
take away his line” stated Ware. Ware’s sponsors include Amy and Gary Wergin Motorsports,
Dewine Mechanical, Kula Repair T & R Auto Repair and Demon Decals.
The Runner Freight IMCA Modified A Main saw Nate Thompson’s 3T,
the 25! of Trevor Baker, Rik Gropp in the V45 and the 86 of Justin Wulf out front
on the first lap. Peter Shoup spun the 79 in turn 3 on lap 3 and then looped it
again on the restart. A car hit the cone on the next restart and then on the
next try there was a big pileup in turn 4. Baker took the lead when action resumed
finally with Gropp second, Chad Andersen’s 8C third and Thompson fourth. Wulf
got fourth back the next lap. 1 more circuit was in the books when Andersen
passed Gropp. Jordan Grabouski put the 30 into fourth on lap 7 and moved to
third the next lap with Shane Hiatt putting the 21H into fourth. Grabouski
advanced to second with 11 laps remaining, taking the lead after 2 more laps.
Hiatt moved up to third the next time around. Norm Ziegenbein spun the1Z with 7
to go. Rodney Stopak’s 1Rs, the 3A of Aaron Pella and Mike Lineberry in the 72
all spun in turns 1 and 2 on the restart. Wulf regained fourth momentarily with
6 to go, but the pass was negated when Baker spun out in turns 1 & 2. The
final top four remained unchanged to the finish with Grabouski first, Andersen second,
Hiatt third and Gropp fourth.
Grabouski was racing with a heavy heart after having lost his
newborn son earlier in the week. “When we started the race people were crashing
out, so we had to keep our nose clean. We had the fastest car, but we needed to
wait and strike when the time was right. We made the right decisions in
traffic, kept our nose clean and managed to bring home the W. We had a really
good car tonight. Hats off to everybody who helps me out on the car. It’s been
a tough week for us, and we really could use this win. I want to thank my family,
my wife and everyone else who supports me. Through tough times you realize how
much support and love you have” related Grabouski.
Noah Boller’s 26B, the 52D of Devin Bruce, Braydon Thornton’s
21T and the 55 of Adam Reifler were the top 4 after the initial lap of the ATV
Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A. Daniel Morris’ 22B stopped on lap 2 for a
caution. Reifler moved up to third on the restart and took over second after 1
more circuit as Shawn Hein put the 5H into third and Dillon Richards moved the
18X into fourth. Those moves were called back when Thornton’s car rolled in turn
2 brought out the red flag. Bruce went to the pits during this time, making the
top 4 Boller, Hein, Richards and the 13J of Josh Young. Hein took over the lead
with 9 laps remaining. Richards followed him into second 2 laps later. Richards
passed Hein with 5 circuits left, lost the position back to Hein with 2 to go
but got back past him for the victory. The top 4 were Richards, Hein, Boller and
Young.
This was Richards’ first appearance at Eagle Raceway this
year in a sport compact as he had been competing in the hobby stock class. He
said “The track was a little rough, but it was good and racy. So, I won’t
complain when it’s like this. It was close between Shawn and me. I was really nervous,
because I didn’t know if I could get him or not but transponders don’t lie! I
want to thank my step-dad Wade. He builds the cars and sets them up for me and
Zach and Drake also help me out. Also Trenten Fugett and everybody else who
does their part”. Richards’ sponsors include Sutton Repair and Global Repair.
Last was the A Feature for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. Keith
Dragoo put the 77D out front of the first circuit with the 20 of Tim Hilfiker,
Boyd Peterson’s 57B and the 1 of Doug Lovegrove rounding out the top 4. Paul
Hendrickson’s 19JR stopped in turn 1 on lap 2 with Jason Danley’s 4X making
contact and flipping. Danley was not seriously injured, but his car was damaged
too badly to continue. Lovegrove took
advantage of the restart to move up to third. Ryan Kitchen put the 21 into
fourth the next time around. Gene Ackland passed Kitchen the next lap, putting
the 14G into fourth but lost the spot to Peterson. Tyler Drueke joined the
battle for fourth, taking the #12 into that position after another lap. Drueke
advanced to second on lap 7 to go as Lovegrove moved to third. Lap 11 saw Joey
Danley take fourth in the 14. Danley rocketed into first the next time around
with Drueke holding second and Lovegrove falling to fourth. 5 laps remained as
Lovegrove advanced to third and Kitchen again took over the fourth spot. Danley
lengthened his lead to the checkers to take the win with Drueke second,
Lovegrove third and Kitchen fourth.
This was
Danley’s second win in a row and third on the year, coming from 18th
on the starting grid after transferring from the B. “We definitely earned it tonight!
We had a rough heat race and got caught up in a wreck. We had a lot of work to
do to be able to make it out for the B Feature and somehow made it all of the
way to the front of the A. I’m just as shocked as everybody else is; I did NOT
expect that!! We definitely had a rocket for a car though. The moisture stayed
in the track all night, which is always good because we save on tires that way.
It’s hard to ask for anything better when you have 150 plus cars here every week”
stated Danley. Danley’s sponsors include Heiserman Flooring, Nissen Hardwood
Floors, Automotive Services, Russell Shoulders Racing Engines, CleanRite
Sweeping, Empire Fencing and Complete Window and Door Solutions.
