If you looked
up ‘Perfect Night for Racing’ in the dictionary, you would see a picture of
Saturday night at Eagle Raceway!! Temperatures started out in the low 80’s with
lots of sun and a northerly breeze, cooling to the high 60’s by A Feature time.
The large
crowd that showed up for Double Down Duel presented by Hormel and Miller Lite
were treated to lots of racing thanks to the 160 cars that pulled into the
pits. Despite 1 ¾” of rain the night before the track prep crew did their magic
and by the time the finales rolled out there were 2 racing lines and plenty of action.
The only
major incidents both occurred in the IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car B Feature. On
the initial start there was a big mess going into turn 1, resulting in the #28
of Tom Belsky rolling over. On the second try another pile-up happened in turns
3 and 4 that had the 3G of Bill Garrow going up and over. Neither driver was
seriously injured, but both cars were badly damaged.
In the IMCA
Sport Mod A Feature Dana Deeke’s 36, the 18 of Dion Kovar, Cole Wayman in the
18T and Logan Thomsen’s 9T were the top 4 after the first lap. Thomsen moved up
to third on lap 2 but gave the position back to Wayman the next time around.
Kovar snagged the lead on lap 6. Deeke spun the next time around and Kovar retired.
That put Wayman out front with Thomsen, the 27 of Anthony Kobus and Joe Feyen in
the 25X the top 4. Kobus passed Thomsen on the restart and took the lead the
next lap. Feyen got past Kobus after another circuit but lost the spot back to
him the next lap. Also, the 40 of Shawn Harker moved up to fourth the same lap.
Scott Bivens’ S56 stopped in turns 1 & 2 the next time around to bring out
the yellow flag. 1 lap after the restart Harker advanced to third and took over
the second spot the next lap. Lance Borgman cracked the top 4 in the 76 after
another lap was in the books. With 4 circuits remaining Adam Vrbka’s 7V stopped
on the back stretch as the caution lights were lit again. Borgman took third on
the restart. The final change in the top 4 came on the final lap as Harker made
a last-ditch effort for the win and passed Kobus coming out of turn 4 for the
victory by a margin of just 33/1000’s of a second!!! Harker, Kobus, Borgman and
Feyen ended up the top 4.
This was Harker’s
4th win out of 5 races this season at Eagle Raceway. “OH BOY! THAT
WAS CLOSE!! I knew it was close, and I thought I won but you never know when
you’re coming to the checkered flag like that. I was being patient; just trying
to work my way through there. Some people don’t see it, that it’s an 18-lap
race and they want to win it on the first lap. I just tried to be patient. We
had a problem with the car last night and thought we got it fixed, but we had
another problem that came up tonight. I wasn’t even sure we could make it out
for the heat race, but my guys jumped right in on it and got it fixed in time.
I really have to thank my wife again; she was a trooper today. We had that
problem and I needed parts from Lincoln. We live in Nebraska City and it’s an
hour and 10 minutes away. She didn’t hesitate to jump in the car and head out
to get what we needed, even though she had plans of her own. I just can’t thank
her enough for doing that” he said. Harker’s sponsors include Speedway Motors, Johnny Saathoff with Jet
Racing, Cole with Lakeside Landscaping, VP Heartland Fuels, Tex Cattle, Kyle
Vanouver, D-Sign Shop and Patriot Crane and Rigging.
The
Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were the next Feature. Lap 1 saw Colby Kaspar’s
39C, the 92 of Don Hall Jr., Tyler Jackson in the 13T and Jeff Watts’ 66 out
front. Watts passed Jackson for third on lap 4. Hall fell to the infield on lap
7, moving Watts to second, Jackson back to third and putting the 22 of Nick
Beckman fourth. Tyler Saathoff’s 16T stopped at the top of turn 2 the next lap
after losing a tire. Beckman spun out on the restart moving the 11B of Brett
Saathoff to fourth. Roy Armstrong jumped up to third in the 6R with 8 to go as
Jackson again fell back to fourth. Armstrong continued his march to the front,
taking over second with 5 to go and moving up to the lead the next lap. 2 laps
later Jackson took back the third spot and Dillon Richards put the 24R into
fourth the next time around. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Watts, Jackson and
Richards.
“The track
was a little rough tonight, but I know that Roger did everything that he could
with the weather conditions that we had; so, hats off to him. I want to say ‘Happy
Birthday’ to Racine and thanks to Michelle also. We’ve been struggling a little
bit this year. We’ve had good finishes, but just haven’t made it to victory
lane. It was nice to get back there tonight. There’s a lot of fast car here at
Eagle and a lot of good drivers. There’s great competition every week, no doubt
about it. I want to thank my sponsors; Schmidt Machine, Hummer Contracting and
NEAPCO. Thanks to my sister Bonnie, my girlfriend Jo and Ron for helping me in
the pits”.
Jeff
Schroyer’s 007 held the lead after the first lap of the Runner Freight IJCA
Modified A Main with Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 81 of Mike Densberger and Jaxon
Saathoff’s 96 rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw Dan Nelson put the 94 into
fourth. Densberger passed Lineberry for second on lap 3 and grabbed the lead
the next time around. Nelson was also on the move moving the third on lap 4 and
advancing to second the next lap. Rik Gropp cracked the top 4 with 12 to go in
the V45 and moved up to third the next circuit. Johnny Saathoff passed Gropp
with 8 to go to put the 96J into fourth. Dustin Andersen looped the 8A in turns
3 & 4 with 5 to go. Jordan Grabouski, who had to transfer through the B
Feature took over fourth in his #30 with 4 to go and vaulted into second after
2 more laps. The final change in the top 4 came on the last lap as Gropp again
moved up to fourth. The final top 4 were Densberger, Grabouski, Nelson and
Gropp.
This was
Densberger’s first Eagle Raceway in quite a while and came from the 5th
starting spot. Densberger related “It’s been a long time; almost 3 years now. I
knew there was a lot of fast cars behind me, so I wanted to get to the front
and keep them behind me. It was a little rough tonight, but after how much rain
we got last night you couldn’t ask for a better track. We set the car up for it
and she was a rocket tonight”. Densberger’s sponsors include Johnny Saathoff
with Jet Racing, Skytop Towers, Miller Farms, Dynamic Drivelines, Gana Trucking
and Excavating, Neeman Refuse, Randy Ward and Jackie and the Niederhaus family.
Fred Johnson
was first back to the flag stand in the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A
Main in the #69 followed by the 25 of Josh Johnson. Lap 2 saw Shawn Hein put
the 5H into second with the 13J of Josh Young in third and Josh Johnson holding
onto fourth. Zach Bohlmeyer passed Johnson on lap 5, making the 24Z fourth, but
lost the spot back to Josh Johnson the next time around. Fred Johnson went
extremely high with 8 to go moving Hein to first and Young to second. Bohlmeyer
jumped to third with 5 to go and Steffen Oaks moved to fourth in the 17. Young
snagged the top spot with 3 to go. Hein slowed on the final lap, making the top
4 young, Bohlmeyer, Jeff Creek in the 18X and Oaks. Bohlmeyer was disqualified
in tech after the race, moving Creek and Bohlmeyer up and allowing Josh Johnson
to take home the fourth spot.
This was
Young’s first victory at Eagle Raceway in this his third year in the sport
compacts and came from the second row outside on the starting grid. “That was
my cousin Shawn and I battling there at the beginning. We always race each
other tough; its always good competition. It was fun and a good race. Tonight
wasn’t my type of track; I like a muddy track. But, we still got it done. Unfortunately,
I ended up blowing my motor on the first corner of the cool-down lap. I want to
thank my girlfriend Morgan, my mom and step-dad, Anthony and Ty” he stated.
Young’s sponsors include Brown’s Masonry and Tree Spraying, Husker Rehab and Fester’s
Bait and Tackle.
The IMCA Racesaver
Sprint Cars then rolled onto the track for their finale. Paul Hendrickson’s
19J, the 0 of Chase Weiler, Gene Ackland in the 14G and Neil Nickolite in the
12N led the pack at the end of the first circuit. Ackland got sideways in turn
1 and ended up hopping the Armco guardrail in the air before coming to a halt
on the grass inside the fence on all 4 wheels. A complete restart was then
called for. The first official lap saw Weiler out front, the 7 of Toby Chapman
second, Ryan King’s 93 third and Nickolite fourth. Chapman moved to the lead on
lap 2 with King remaining in third and Hendrickson falling to fourth. Joey Danley
got past Hendrickson the next, moved up to third after another circuit and grabbed
second the next time around. Danley moved to the lead on lap 5 as Stu Snyder
put the #5 into fourth. Snyder advanced to third the next lap. Despite heavy
traffic Danley held off the field to the checkers. The final top 4 were Danley
Chapman, Snyder and Tyler Drueke who took the #12 into fourth with four laps
left.
Danley’s
victory was his first this season, after suffering several failures to begin the year. He said “Finally!
It’s been a rough start for sure. I lost one motor already and had some other
rough luck, but we finally put one together tonight. I initially started 11th,
but that wreck at the beginning helped us out a little bit. We just kind of set
sail from there and drove it right to the front. That was some heavy traffic
though. I thought I was going to lose the lead in traffic, but evidently I
built up enough of a lead and that’s probably the only reason I held on there.
I was struggling at the end. When I got out there in clean air that’s what won
us the race because once I caught the lapped traffic I couldn’t figure out how
to get around them”. Danley’s sponsors include Heiserman Flooring, Nissen Hardwood
Floors, Automotive Services, Russell Shoulders Racing Engines, CleanRite Sweeping
and Empire Fencing.
