Eagle Raceway 7/28/18

The large crowd who filed through the gates of Eagle Raceway Saturday evening for Go Lucky 55 Night, presented by Racesaver and Hormel were greeted by cloudy skies and very un-July like temperatures in the mid-70’s. The track, thanks to a heavy overnight rain was FAST and extremely racy.

There were no significant incidents in the preliminary racing.

The Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod A Feature’s first lap saw Bobby Draper’s 62, the 9T of Logan Thomsen, Lane Cornwell’s 14X and the 99W of Hunter Weber lead the pack. Cornwell moved to second in lap 2 with Gary Saathoff putting the 96 into third and Trevor Noonan moving to fourth in the 66 on lap 3. Josh Pfeiffer in the 33J and Dillon Schultz’s 55D both stopped on the front stretch the next time around for a caution period. 1 lap after the restart Thomsen looped it in turns 1 and 2 and Noonan was sent to the rear for the contact. That made the top 4 Draper, Cornwell, Gunnar Pike in the 25 and Saathoff. Saathoff passed Pike on the restart and Shawn Harker in the 40 moved up to fourth. Harker passed Saathoff the next lap, but Pfeiffer again spun out, negating that pass. Jeremy Baker lost the left rear wheel on his 3J at the same time and went to the pits on the hook. Randy Fox’s 09RX spun in turn 4 on the restart. Harker vaulted all of the way up to first 1 lap after the restart. Saathoff regained third with 6 to go as Pike got back to fourth. Anthony Kobus jumped the 27 up to third with 2 to go and grabbed second on the last lap making the final top 4 Harker, Kobus, Saathoff and Draper.

This was Harker’s 6th victory this season at Eagle Raceway. “That was a good race! The track was a little rough because of all of the rain, but everybody has to race on the same track. You have to just set the car up and get to it. My guys said that the new body we had on the car was bad luck, so we spent a couple of weeks beating the old body back into shape, trying to get it back on the car. It looks a little rough, but hopefully it’s bringing us a little luck” he said. Harker’s sponsors include Speedway Motors, Johnny Saathoff with Jet Racing, Cole with Lakeside Landscaping, VP Heartland Fuels, Tex Cattle, Kyle Vanouver, D-Sign Shop and Patriot Crane and Rigging.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale saw Chantel Bade’s 02 spin out in turn 3 at the start. She was towed to the pits with significant front-end damage. When a lap was officially in the books Michael Wade’s 12, the 24R of Dillon Richards, Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B and the26L of Brint Lemke were the top 4. Lemke moved up to third on lap 2. Lap 3 saw Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth. Lemke took the second spot on the next circuit but lost the spot to Richards the next time around and Armstrong advanced to third. Richards and Armstrong mov ed to first and second on lap 6. Jeff Ware put the 83 into third after another lap as Nick Beckman took fourth in the 22. Armstrong snagged the lead on lap 10. Then last change in the top 4 came the next lap as Ware moved up to second. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Ware, Richards and Beckman.

Win #3 on the year for Armstrong came from the 11th starting spot. He related “We had a bad night last week, but we got it fixed and got back here. The car is still competitive and that’s the main thing. I want to give a special thanks to a couple of sponsors who have helped us out for quite awhile now; Tom Purcell from Icon Pistons and Craig over at Scat Enterprises. Also, my other sponsors Schmidt Machine, NEAPCO and Hummer Contracting. My girlfriend Jo does all of our videotaping and my sister Bonnie who does our pictures. Also, my pit crew John. Make sure to thank Roger, Michelle and Racine for another great night of racing”.

Trevor Baker in the 25!, Nate Thompsen’s 3T, the 86 of Justin Wulf and Jared Deterding in the 13J led the field at the end of lap #1 of the Runner Freight IMCA Modified A Main. Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth on lap 2. Norm Ziegenbein looped his 1Z on lap 5. 1 lap after the restart Brandon Verbeek spun the 4B in turns 1 and 2 for another caution. Wulf moved up to second on lap 7 with Mike Densberger jumping into third in the 81 with Hiatt holding fourth. Densberger moved up to second with 10 to go and Jordan Grabouski passed Hiatt to move the #30 into fourth. Densberger snared the lead with 7 laps remaining. Wulf moved up to second the next lap and Grabouski advanced to third the next time around. Jaxon Saathoff looped the 96 with 2 to go. Hiatt used the restart to retake fourth, making the top 4 at the end Densberger, Wulf, Grabouski and Hiatt.

Victory #3 for Densberger this year came after starting eighth. “The track was a little rough as should be expected with all of the rain that we got, but we left the car free. I stayed patient, kept my nose clean and got the results that we wanted” he stated. Densberger’s sponsors include Johnny Saathoff with Jet Racing, Skytop Towers, Miller Farms, Dynamic Drivelines, Gana Trucking and Excavating, Neeman Refuse, Randy Ward and Jackie and the Niederhaus family.

The ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Feature saw Adam Reifler put the 55 into the lead after the first circuit with Jared Jackson’s 98, the 52D of Devin Bruce and Dan Markham in the 6 close behind. Justin Callender put the 13BS into fourth on lap 2. Steffen Oaks made a huge jump in the 17 the next time around, vaulting up to send. Bruce moved back to third after another circuit with Callender holding fourth. The yellow lights were lit in the corners the next time around for debris on the track. Jackson spun in turn 4 with 10 to go and Oaks left the track. At that time the top 4 were Reifler, Bruce, Callender and Josh Young in the 13J. Young and Callender traded the third position over the next 2 laps with Callender holding the spot and Shawn Hein moving to fourth. Jackson slowed to a stop on the back stretch with 6 laps remaining. On the restart Reifler blew a tire on the restart. That made the top 4 Bruce, Callender, Young and Etherton. Callender grabbed the lead for good with 4 to go. Etherton advanced to third on the last lap making the top 4 Callender, Bruce, Etherton and Young.

This was Callender’s second win of the season here at Eagle. “A big huge thanks to Web Chassis and Dillon Richards for helping me get the car fixed up from the bad week last week. I got pushed into the wall, bent the rear end up and damaged the front end. We did a lot of maintenance this week, but obviously it payed off. Devin Bruce was definitely hard to get around. It was a good little drag race down the back stretch, but we were just a touch faster and got past him. That was a fun race!! It was great getting a second win, and hopefully we can get another since we have a few races left” stated Callender. Callender’s sponsors include Revolution Wraps, Great Clips, Web Chassis, Wheel Specialists and Trouble Maker Choppers.

Nick Bryan grabbed the lead at the start of the Racesaver IMCA Sprint A Feature in the 52 with Rodney Droud’s 40X, the 77D of Keith Dragoo and Boyd Peterson’s 57B rounding out the top 4. Neil Nickolite’s 12N jumped all the way to second on lap 2 with Toby Chapman putting the #7 into fourth on lap 3. Peterson regained fourth the next lap. 1 more circuit was in the books when Nickolite took over the lead and Chapman moved back to fourth. Bryan regained the lead on lap 8. Chapman moved up to third with 8 to go. Ryan Kitchen took over the fourth spot the next time around in the 21 but lost the spot back to Droud. Jason Martin lost the left rear wheel assembly from the 5X with 4 laps remaining. Chapman moved to second on the restart as Kitchen again took the fourth position. Tyler Drueke put the 12 into fourth the net lap, took over third after another circuit and advanced to second the next time around. The last lap saw Mike Boston put the 51 into fourth. At the checkers it was Bryan, Drueke, Chapman and Boston.

This marked the first 2018 win for Bryan at Eagle Raceway in this, just his second appearance at the track this year. “It was actually pretty maneuverable there on the bottom with the berm this week. We came in tonight and checked in a little late, so we didn’t get our starting spot at the front of the heat race, so we really had to work for it. We got a caution in the heat race and got into the invert, so we started on the front row of the Feature tonight. We tightened up the car a little bit and maneuvered around there. Somebody showed their nose a few times, but at the same time I just kept watching the scoreboard, counting down the laps and tried to stay out front. This year we haven’t been racing that much because we lost some sponsors throughout the last few years. That kind of put a hardship on the expenses. We knew that we really wanted to race at the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals. To qualify for the Nationals we knew that we had to race at least 3 shows. I helped out Mike Boston through the year. Looking at the weather over the next 2 months you never know what you’re going to get, so we decided to start racing. We’re still racing on the engine from last year. We ran this engine the last 4 Nationals and it has 50 plus shows on it! We’re waiting on our engine builder to get our other one ready to go. I want to thank Mom and Dad, Rod, Tyler, Nate, Nick and Mike plus everyone else who comes over and helps us get to the races” he stated. Bryan’s sponsors include Finish Line Race Products, Sardeson Racing, Wollen Racing Engines and Onyx Wraps.
